Purpose of borders
By constructing garden borders, you provide the flower garden with protection against weed germination, clearly outline the borders of the flower bed and keep the lawns and paths clean, since the ground from the flower bed does not apply to them. The shape of the flower bed remains clearly limited, grass weeding and mowing are significantly reduced.
The edge of the flower bed, even simply crafted, creates a well-groomed and neat appearance. And protected by a border all the more. The flower garden immediately becomes a noticeable decoration of the garden.
Border design options
You can design beautiful and original decorative fences and borders in various ways, consider some of them:
Dug up borders
The easiest and most widely used method for gardeners. Outwardly, it looks like a small moat located along the edge of the flower bed, delimiting the plot into a garden zone and a flower garden. Its parameters are selected depending on the type of soil and the size of the rhizomes of flowering plants.
Mosaic borders
Known since ancient times, but in our days have not lost popularity. Today they are also fashionable and loved by many. The mosaic decor is delicate and unusual, resistant to cold and humid climates, easy to use and will last a very long time.
Patterned drawings can be delicate or vice versa coarse, it all depends on what size, color and texture chips are used.
As a material for the curb, small fragments of natural or artificial stones, ceramics or glass are used. Such a curb solution is a win-win for low flower beds and a bright accent in the landscape of the garden area.
The mosaic border is easy to do with your own hands:
- select the location of the flowerbed, its shape, ornament and material of the border element;
- choose a base, as which you can apply fragments of the same or different in size, texture and in various combinations;
- in the planned place, dig a longitudinal groove 15-20 cm in depth, cover the bottom with a mixture of gravel, sand and gravel, fill with cement mortar (3 parts of sand per 1 part of cement). For complex mosaics, a dry mixture is used, which is wetted after creating the ornament, since hardened cement will not allow you to adjust the pattern if necessary;
- in a slightly hardened composition, form the planned mosaic pattern, immersing them in cement 1/3 with a rubber mallet;
- Wipe the joints, removing excess cement;
- cover the mosaic with plastic wrap until it dries completely;
- after 4-5 days, grind the surface with a special machine or abrasives.
Wicker borders
Since ancient times, used to fence plots of land in rural areas. Perfectly fit into the design of a farmhouse in a rustic style.
In addition, they are quite easy and affordable to make yourself:
- prepare cut willow branches of a certain length and thickness, remove the side branches;
- clear branches from bark to avoid seedlings;
- in a prepared place in the ground, drive in wooden stakes, which will serve as the basis;
- pass each branch between the stakes in a checkerboard pattern;
- when the stakes are entwined over the entire height with willow branches, the fence is ready.
Arched weaving is a more complicated method, in which the rods are bent in the form of an arc and their edges are driven into the ground. Thus, several more rods are constructed, the distance between which is from 5 to 20 cm. When the perimeter is completely full, we begin weaving horizontally.
Live border
These are rows of low plants, miniature flowers or undersized shrubs (up to 40 cm), planted around the perimeter of the flower bed. Beautiful flower borders on the plot perfectly refresh the overall look and make it brighter.
Rosette plants planted along the edge, sprawling undersized plants, cabbage or salads (decorative) will look great.
Wooden stakes border
Perfect for landscaping the site, because the tree is natural, harmonious and economical. In addition to stakes, columns of small diameter wood can be used.
Metal fencing
These are metal continuous tapes in the manufacture of which copper, steel or aluminum is used. Simply build such a fence yourself.
To do this, you need to immerse a thin sheet of metal around the perimeter of the flowerbed, separating it from the weeds. It will decorate the landscape and emphasize the correctness of lawn lines and flower beds, has a long service life, as it is resistant to external atmospheric conditions.
Stone border decor
This type of decoration has long been successfully used by designers in the decoration of garden landscapes. This can be rubble stone, pebbles of medium and small sizes, medium-sized crushed stone, artificial stone materials or brick pieces.

The advantages of plastic borders include: affordable cost, durability, resistance to temperature changes, moisture resistance, lack of rot, not susceptible to pests, easy assembly and disassembly process, flexibility, light weight.
Borders made of mulch, gravel or stone chips
Outwardly they look expressive and at the same time the choice of materials for application is very wide. Their service life is very long. Most often used for arranging flower beds along terraces or garden paths.
The raised version of the flowerbed
This way of decorating the flower bed will look great along fences and paths, or as delimiting zones. Particularly harmoniously, flower beds fit into the contrasting landscape relief.
